How to Prepare for Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

You have been in pain for some time and now your appointment is booked. Being prepared for your first appointment means you will be on the road to recovery more quickly.

How will Physiotherapy help me?

The purpose of physiotherapy is to restore, maintain, and make the most of a patient’s mobility, function, and well-being. It can help you through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, and achieving better health and fitness. It is important to know that physiotherapy always involves the patient being committed to the improvement process.

Before your appointment, you will begin with an online intake form. Make sure you have your important documents on hand, such as:

  • Health card
  • Insurance Information
  • Health history/information

‍What clothing should I wear to my first physiotherapy appointment in order to get the most out of the examination? We suggest wearing comfortable loose-fitting clothes that you can move in for your examination. If you have any questions, check with us in advance to be sure you are prepared. We may ask that you bring one or all of the following:

  • Shorts
  • A loose fitting t-shirt
  • Exercise sneakers

Once you have completed intake the diagnostic process will begin. Your therapist will want to interview you to develop a full picture of your condition and start your diagnosis. You will be asked lots of questions about your injury or condition. This can take at least half, and sometimes more, of the first appointment. The more you prepare for this conversation, the better you will be ready to answer the questions.
